All right. A basic background of me.
My name is Nathan Percy and I'm currently a student at Fullerton College. I'm 23 years old and have a job as a server at the Improv Comedy Club in Brea, CA and I'm a beat writer for high school sports for the La Habra Journal in La Habra, CA. I currently live in Brea (North Orange County) and am an avid sports fan and this blog will partly be opinions of mine about current events in the sports world.
Anyway, I didn't want to start this off on a negative, but this past weekend at the Improv, we had a comedian by the name of Russell Peters. For those who don't know, Peters is one of those comedians that got EXTREMELY popular overnight and now as a fame that equals Dane Cook.
Here's the deal. I don't think Peters is funny at all. I think he only appeals to one demographic - people with the same background as his. However, his fans eat it up.
The good thing about Russell Peters is that he has gotten so big that he does sell out every show and the fact that we were able to add shows that also sold out. The problem lies in the crowds themselves. They're very rude, high maintenance and rowdy, the exact opposite of an ideal crowd. Russell Peters put on eight shows throughout the weekend and they were eight of the hardest shows I've ever had to work. I've never been so happy to see Monday come around. I've never had to repeat myself so many times just to get a simple message into somebody's thick skull! And I've never EVER had to remind people that there was a two-item minimum per person inside the restaurant.
Not to mention these people were lousy tippers. On Sunday night, I had a party that was on the verge of getting kicked out because they were interrupting the show (and one of the guys apparently pissed all over the floor of the bathroom). I told the door staff not to kick them out yet, and that I would keep an eye on them and keep them out of trouble. What did I get for it? a 5 percent tip and two of them laughing about it as they walked out after the show.
This weekend was supposed to be a big money-maker for everyone. Instead it turned into a huge flop for anyone who wasn't at the front of the room every night. And the shows were extremely long, because Peters would let every comedian who showed up have a chance on stage without cutting down on his own time, so every show was at least 45 minutes longer than it should have been.
Anyway, the weekend is over and I'm getting ready for another great week of school and high school baseball (for the La Habra Journal). Big series coming up for La Habra High, which I will explain later.
All right, that's enough for now. Just a little glimpse into my life and a current event to rant about. Hopefully I'm not coming off too negatively because I do have quite a bit to smile about.
